February 2-25, 2018
Opening Reception: Friday, February 2 from 7-9pm

The Art2 (Art Squared) exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery explores the synergy of art with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This show overlaps with National Engineering Week and includes workshops to engage STEM-interested public of all ages. Come see how creativity drives the mind to explore and inspires scientists to ask questions and search for understanding. Principles of symmetry, geometry and measurements are often used in creating beautiful artwork. Likewise, scientific disciplines can inspire and inform art, as with anatomy in figure paintings, geology in landscapes, meteorological events in dramatic compositions, and physics in 3D installations.

Join us at the opening reception on Friday, February 2 from 7-9pm to view the art and meet the curators, artists, and other art appreciators.

The Art2 art exhibit runs February 2-25, 2018 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are: Thursdays 12-6pm, Fridays 12-9pm, Saturdays 12-9pm, and Sundays 12-6pm. The gallery is free, open to the public, and handicap accessible.

From the earliest drawings on cave walls to the journals of travelers, the exacting engravings of James Audubon and watercolors of A. A. Milne, much of our knowledge of the natural world came from artists. The Outdoors In art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans explores this topic. Artists demonstrate in painting, sculpture, textiles, found materials, drawing, and other media, the influence and representation of the natural world around us. The exhibit features work from Del Ray Artisans member artists and local high school and college students as well.

Join us at the opening reception on Friday, March 2 from 7-9pm to view the art and meet the curators, artists, and other art appreciators. During the reception, Del Ray Artisans’ President Drew Cariaso and the 25th Anniversary Committee will gift Alexandria City Public Schools with a check to purchase books related to art and artisans for Cora Kelley, William Ramsay, John Adams, Jefferson Houston, and Patrick Henry Elementary Schools. The gift is the fruition of Del Ray Artisans’ 25th Anniversary Legacy Project.

The Outdoors In art exhibit runs March 2 through April 1, 2018 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are: First Thursdays (April-September) 12-9pm, Thursdays 12-6pm, Fridays 12-9pm, Saturdays 12-9pm, and Sundays 12-6pm. The gallery is free, open to the public, and handicap accessible.

(Models will be nude unless otherwise noted.) These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint from our live models. We don’t supply easels but you are welcome to bring your own if you want to use one. Please no acrylics or oils; pastels, watercolor and ink are permissible. All skill levels are welcome.

The fee for each three-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. Two-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members.

Gesture Sessions

Member Meeting & Art Supplies Swap @ Del Ray Artisans Gallery
Mar 4 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Sunday, March 4 from 4-6pm

member meeting and art swapThe time is here! Join us at our most popular All Members Meeting: Del Ray Artisans’ annual Art Supplies Swap! If you haven’t already, check your studios, basements, closets, attics—wherever you have stashed those old art supplies that you really thought you would use, and bite the bullet… if you haven’t used them yet—give someone else a chance! And maybe you will find a new project waiting for you!

Please bring your old supplies with you to the meeting. This year, we are asking that you to take a look at what you have and see if any or all can be donated to the Prison Art on a Mission—an initiative run by local artist, Kelli Sincock. A list of the much-needed / prison-approved list of items is provided below.

Any supplies not donated to Prison Art on a Mission will be collected and displayed in the middle of the room. Light refreshments will be served as we learn about the latest Del Ray Artisans news and view the supplies. We will then pull names from a hat to take turns choosing “new” supplies! I can’t wait to see what everyone brings this year!

—Sophia Suarez, Director of Membership, Membership@DelRayArtisans.org
